Chavez boycotted Whisky


The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez declared a boycott against the most popular alcoholic beverage in the region: whiskey. This shortage caused a reduction in imports and a rise in prices in shops and bars of almost 50%.

"In the past month and a half we received only 5 percent of our orders whiskey," said Fernando Soto, president of Licores Mundiales. Due to the shortage, prices increased at Diageo Plc. and Pernod-Ricard SA. by 50%.

The lack of whiskey is a victory for Chavez, this drink skeptical faces. "The rich are lazy and they spend all day drinking whiskey and golf," said Chavez on 15 May during an interview.
